During these gatherings there would be feasting, dancing, and the redistribution of property or its destruction. In these societies, children were raised with the idea of the gift firmly implanted in their worldview. WebThe potlatch is a festival tradition that has evolved from the special feast of the humble hunting/gathering tribes of the northwest, to the non-equalitarian tribes structuring castes, to the competitive potlatch wars. The potlatch may continue to evolve and birth new traditions; an example of this is “Celebration,” initiated by Sealaska in Juneau.
